Teitur
Teitur. A one word name. From the Faroe Islands. There are almost no trees, just rocks, green pastures, beautiful views, wind and rain. Lots of rain. He is an artist whose music and lyrics remind you what songs can do for the soul. Teitur's 2003 debut album, Poetry & Aeroplanes, produced by Rupert Hine, displayed a warm organic sound combining his unique acoustic guitar playing and one-take-vocals with subtle, beautiful arrangements, winning over fans around the world as it was gradually released in over 12 countries. Teitur toured non-stop in support of his debut, initially playing intimate acoustic shows, slowly winning over bigger and bigger audiences as he fleshed out his live performances with a band and sometimes string quartet, playing over 350 shows around the world including more than 150 in North America.
To record his second album, Teitur enlisted the help of London based, Swedish producer Martin Terefe (KT Tunstall, A-Ha, Ron Sexsmith and James Morrison)
to produce the album. The result of the recording is the stunning album Stay Under The Stars, a dynamic and well crafted collection of songs reflecting
Teitur's unique view on stories, situations and life as well as his newer, fuller live sound and wider outlook on the world.
The album debuted in the Top 10 in Denmark, and was followed by a number of high profile
performances at European festivals such as Les Eurockéennes in France and Benecassim in Spain, where he played with a dazzling ten-piece
orchestra!
In May, 2007 Teitur released his first album in his native Faroese language entitled Káta Hornio.
The Singer, Teitur's third English-language album was released worldwide in the Spring of 2008. The album was recorded on a picturesque Scandinavian island called Gotland. The title track, with its mixture of direct storytelling, subtle humor, and musical minimalism, sets the tone for the rest of the album. Teitur channels a Scandinavian vibe into slow, often dark songs that can feel like musical fragments because of their sparse instrumentation and lack of traditional pop-song structure. The album has been called quiet, beautiful, harsh and contemplative, very natural and somehow Nordic sounding. There are very few syncopations in the music and the setting is minimalist and dramatical with vast colours and large empty landscapes. The songs are written over a seven year period and focus on individual events and experiences. The Singer entered the Danish charts at no. 6, and made its way to the no. 1 album on iTunes in Denmark.
In 2007 Teitur was named Best Male Artist at the Danish Music Awards, and The Best singer/songwriter in 2009 for the album The Singer. In 2008 he opened the main stage for Radiohead at the Roskilde Festival.
